JPEG2000 - The very best in image compression
JPEG2000 represents the next generation in image compression and, as such, promises
some of the most exciting advances in the way we store and manipulate digital images
since the original JPEG format was introduced back in 1992. In simple terms, JPEG2000
allows you to store high resolution images in the smallest possible files, at the
best possible quality levels. Typically, a photographic image can be compressed
to one fiftieth (1:50) of its original size with no discernable loss in image quality,
even when used for print or other quality-sensitive applications. This revolutionary
technology means that for the first time images can be transferred over low-bandwidth
communication channels such as email without any compromises in quality or size.
Quite simply, JPEG2000 is as good as image compression gets.
Who is JPEG2000 designed for?
JPEG2000 is for anyone and everyone needing to store high quality digital images
in the smallest possible files. This includes digital camera owners, graphic designers,
digital archives, image banks, pre-press repro houses and printers, to name but
a few. Other technical applications include the storage and manipulation of medical,
geospatial, and biometric imaging data as well as a host of other proprietary uses.
The Problem with JPEG2000
The one and only problem with JPEG2000 is that everyone should be using it, but
they aren't yet. JPEG2000 is undoubtedly a wonderful image compression system, and
promises to become the de-facto standard for high-end digital imaging applications
for at least the next 10 years.
A relatively small proportion of companies and individuals
have embraced the technology at this stage however, and this leaves users of JPEG2000
with a unique
set of problems. How for instance can a professional photographer
wanting to send high resolution JPEG2000 images to a client be assured that the
recipient has access to the decompression software needed to open them?
The Solution - JP2-Zip
JP2-Zip overcomes the above problem by allowing the photographer to create a small
self-contained Image Archive of his work, from his original JPEG2000 image files.
He can then deliver this to his client, safe in the knowledge that the images contained
within it will be delivered securely and reliably, with NO special software required
at the other end. JP2-Zip offers numerous other advantages too, including, amongst
others, a unique secure image proofing system utilizing strong encryption, digital
signatures for images, and corporately branded image archives. JP2-Zip promises
to play a fundamental role in the adoption and roll-out of JPEG2000 technology to
companies and private individuals the world over, as well as revolutionizing digital
image distribution for both private individuals and corporations alike. To find
